How do I remove a metal splinter?

by Chris on May.08, 2012, under Earth Magnets

How do I remove a metal splinter?

I was walking around barefoot and now a tiny metal splinter is stuck in my toe. I’ve tried pulling it out with tweezers but it’s too small to be gripped. Even a rare earth magnet can’t pull it out. Is there a way of getting it out or should I let it come out on its own?

What would happen if a marble size neodymium magnet got placed inside a hollow golf ball size magnet?

What would happen if a marble size neodymium magnet got placed inside a hollow golf ball size magnet?

If both magnets have an opposing force, what would happen?

Would the inner magnet levitate and stay centered?

Sterling silver slightly reacts to rare earth magnet?

by Chris on Apr.12, 2012, under Earth Magnets

Sterling silver slightly reacts to rare earth magnet?

I have what I believed to be a sterling silver chain. However, the other day I found a rare earth magnet that would react to it. The chain in 95 grams, and is on the shorter side, so it is very thick and hefty. I have tried many different magnets, including very strong magnets, on it and have never had any attraction. The chain is marked .925, tarnishes like sterling, and acid tests like it is real (even with a good deep scratch).

However, the other day I held a rare earth magnet up to it and got a slight reaction. I am talking about an industrial use half pound or so magnet. The chain would not stick, but the magnet would make it twitch and just slightly tug at it.

Any input is appreciated.

how to create a generator that produces 120 volts?

by Chris on Apr.09, 2012, under Earth Magnets

how to create a generator that produces 120 volts?

I am trying to create a hydroelectric generator and make it produce 120 volts. I have been looking all over the internet and at the library to see what is needed to produce the voltage I want. I was wondering if anyone knew a really good website or what is needed to produce the voltage I am looking for. I have the wires stationary and the magnets moving. The magnets were bought off of amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Neodymium-Magnets-inch-Disc-N48/dp/B001KV38ES/ref=pd_sim_k_1 OR http://www.amazon.com/Neodymium-Magnets-inch-Disc-N48/dp/B00269N68Q/ref=pd_sim_k_5) Some questions that I have are:

1. Does the wire gauge matter?
2. How many wire turns do I need to do and how many groups of wires should i have?
3. How fast do the magnets need to spin?

If you have any questions please let me know or email me at jsierra.1992@gmail.com

Gladly appreciate the help given

Held electronic device with rare magnets to face…bad?

Held electronic device with rare magnets to face…bad?

Testing the speaker, i put my face to my new iPad with smart cover on. Realized later there are rare earth magnets inside of the iPad/cover.

Hoping I didn’t scramble anything in my head. Thoughts?

How do you cool a coil of copper wire without liquid nitrogen, oxygen or hydrogen?

by Chris on Nov.16, 2011, under Earth Magnets

How do you cool a coil of copper wire without liquid nitrogen, oxygen or hydrogen?

I am currently trying to generate electricity from the movement of a permanent rare-earth magnet that is about 1.2 Teslas in strength. However, whenever I try to soak a coil of copper wire in liquid nitrogen to increase efficiency, the amperage gets all screwed up. I figured this problem out because the nitrogen is diamagnetic and screws with the magnetic flux generated by the moving magnet. So is there any way to super cool a coil of copper wire without soaking it in liquid nitrogen, oxygen or hydrogen?

Thanks in advance

Why are windmills always the propeller type and not the wind gauge cup type?

by Chris on Oct.13, 2011, under Earth Magnets

Why are windmills always the propeller type and not the wind gauge cup type?

Wouldn’t the wind gauge type be better? It could be installed lower to the ground, it would not have to turn into the wind, there would be no danger to birds, and the generator could be bulkier, especially if they will ultimately will have to be made without rare earth magnets. If you wanted it taller, you could run a shaft to the ground with no gearing. Why not mount several on top of each other, and then make a row or a forest of them that all turn one generator?

Do permant (or rare earth) magnets lose their strength faster in a state of repulsion?

Do permant (or rare earth) magnets lose their strength faster in a state of repulsion?

I’m thinking of performing an experiment with some Halbach arrays in a continuous state of repulsion. Will this cause them to significantly lose strength?

Is any part of the Luminox 3901 divers watch magnetic?

by Chris on Jun.26, 2011, under Earth Magnets

Is any part of the Luminox 3901 divers watch magnetic?

I recently lost my Luminox 3901 watch in a fairly small, but deep body of water. I jumped from a cliff and when I surfaced I noticed it was gone. I can’t believe the band was able to come un-velcroed and out of the loop enough to come off my hand so quickly, but somehow it did. I was wondering if the back of the screw on case, or the metal loop on the cloth band are magnetic? I have some high strength retrieving earth magnets and thought I’d give it a shot, but don’t want to until I know there is some part of the watch is magnetic. Any help would be appreciated!
