How do I check continuity on a range/oven 4 prong power cord?

How do I check continuity on a range/oven 4 prong power cord?

I have a 4 prong 220 volt power cord on my range. It has one circular and three flat prongs. If the circular prong is at the top when you’re looking at it, the left flat prong does not show anything on my multimeter.

I touch any two prongs with the tester and I get a “beep” with the exception of the “left” flat prong. If I touch it and any other prong, I get no connection and no beep. The cord is unplugged from the outlet, but still attached to my range.

Does this mean my cord is bad? The rangetop (with four burners) still works, controlled by the dials, but the oven itself (for baking) and the clock/buttons do not work. My outlet works, I did check that.

Is there another way to check my power cord before buying and connecting a new one? I’m also looking into buying a new clock panel for the range, but I wanted to know about the cord first as it’s a much cheaper fix.

Thank you for your help!

How can I determine the charge of a battery?

by Chris on Mar.20, 2012, under Multimeter

How can I determine the charge of a battery?

For example, i have a discharged 6V Rechargeable Sealed Lead Acid battery. I connected it to a voltmeter and it registers a reading of still 6V. Why is that? How can i know if the battery is really discharged?

Why does the reading of current goes down when measuring with a multimeter?

by Chris on Feb.25, 2012, under Multimeter

Why does the reading of current goes down when measuring with a multimeter?

So I want to figure out the current of a battery. I connect the multimeter directly to a battery. The reading came out to be 0.83A and suddenly it starts decreasing slooooowly all the way to like 0.3A. Why is that? How am I supposed to measure the current?

How do you determine which one is the "hot wire" for a power outlet?

by Chris on Feb.24, 2012, under Multimeter

How do you determine which one is the "hot wire" for a power outlet?

How would you determine which wire was “hot” and which one was neutral by using a voltmeter? Please explain. Thanks!

Physics Question about Parallel Resistance!?

by Chris on Feb.14, 2012, under Multimeter

Physics Question about Parallel Resistance!?

Tom has a sensitive ammeter that requires only 1.000mA of current to provide a full-scale reading. The resistance of the ammeter coil is 500.0 ohms. He wants to use the meter for a physics experiment that requires an ammeter capable of reading to 1.000 A. He has calculated that an equivalent resistance of .5000 ohms will produce the necessary voltage drop of .5000 V (V=IR=1.000 x 10 ^-3 x 500 ohms), so that only 1.000mA of current passes through the meter. What value of shunt resistor, a resistor placed in parallel with the meter, is needed?

I have a dead circuit in my house and is not the breaker?

by Chris on Feb.03, 2012, under Multimeter

I have a dead circuit in my house and is not the breaker?

Entire circuit died in my house. Did some testing with multimeter and found that probale cause is an open neutral somewhere in the circuit. Because all the circuit is down i figured the fault to be close to breaker box. Its not the breaker, I swapped it with known good one. I was able o jump into the crcuit pretty close to the breaker and the neutral bus. I used an alarm clock, it worked. I pulled apart junctions and recipticales and so on and found no open or any other obvious faults. Then, the circuit came back to life on its own for about 10 minutes. Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

Do I have bad body resistance?

I checked it with the voltmeter and it came out to be 0.734 Mohm’s. Is that bad?, and can you explain it.

Have you ever used a hand-held multimeter to measure the exact resistance between your temples?

Have you ever used a hand-held multimeter to measure the exact resistance between your temples?

Tim, you’re not a real man until you have the Fluke model with an oscilloscope screen.
