Now, I know this sounds completely absurd. But what I’m trying to point out is, the power authorities hold in our day-to-day lives. By just saying some complicating words, they take control of our lives, knowing that we have no power over them. And them being “adults”, every adult, well, that is, with the exception of Mr McMahon, is bound to believe themselves, and not children. It’s just the way our world is, and we cannot change it. Instead we can read or watch similar situations, and learn from those “experiences”. One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich portrays a similar situation where the prisoners are imprisoned for mostly unfair reasons, but if they questioned or argued, none of the citizens would neither believe nor stand up for them.
There is definitely a truth in literature, and it is very obvious in society. If you look closely at your own lives, you will see it happening all around you. Now I’m a person who gets really amused by how celebrities completely make a mess of their lives. And I’m not talking the good kind like Justin Bieber wearing his pants a little too low. I’m talking about sex tapes and marriages that cost millions and then last for less than two weeks. But nonetheless, they celebrities hold so much power because of wealth, and they are treated differently, no matter how politicians talk about fair and just legal systems. In September 2006, my new BFF, paris hilton was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, and her driving license was subsequently suspended in November, and was fined $1,50o, which is next to nothing for someone with so much money. However, that didn’t stop her from drink driving, and she was caught twice after. Surprisingly, she got away with very minor penalties each time. I remember reading in my Legal Text last year about how someone who has wealth, success and fame can hold the power to control even the country’s legal system.
Do you see, ladies and gents, how power is abused very easily by those who are fortunate enough to own it, and control others’ lives irrespective of whether it is just or unjust? Literature made me realize that there is such a strong link between words and the real world, regardless of time or age. Reading made it an experience for me, and they act as my weapon and shield for the questions and choices life throws at me. There is a very obvious link between literature and life, and I hope you saw the theme of abuse of power evident in One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, Easy A and the real life example of paris hilton. I hope you too will take advantage of literature when looking at the world like I do. Thank you for listening, and I hope you enjoy the rest of the day.
