Which NDS version should I get?

Which NDS version should I get?
I don’t want to get the 3DS honestly, because I think that the 3D will just waste my batteries, because I probably won’t be using it.
I do want indie games, I don’t know if the 3DS is able to get those.
I just want an NDS that can get indie games, that has a nice battery life, and is capable of r4 (I think every NDS can play that, just to be sure (: )
Suggestions?
